A Guide to NYCHA's Housing Choice Voucher 2024 Waitlist: Your Gateway to Affordable Housing

Through the HCV program, participants have the opportunity to secure housing that meets their requirements and financial means in their preferred neighborhoods. A portion of the rent is determined by the tenant's income, with the remaining balance subsidized.
Applying for the HCV Program
Applications for the HCV Program can be submitted online from June 3, 2024, to June 9, 2024. During this period, all applicants will have an equal chance of being placed on the waitlist, regardless of when they submit their application.
If you do not have internet access or prefer to apply using traditional methods, a limited number of paper applications are available upon request. These can be obtained from NYCHA Customer Contact Centers in Brooklyn and the Bronx from June 3 to June 7, 2024. All paper applications must be postmarked by June 28, 2024, and sent via USPS.
Open to All with a Priority on the Vulnerable
It's important to note that all members of the public, including current NYCHA residents, can apply for the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program without any residency restrictions within New York City.
Nonetheless, NYCHA recognizes the diverse needs of applicants and has implemented priority codes to ensure that the most vulnerable populations, such as the mobility-impaired, the elderly, and persons with disabilities, receive proper consideration.
Income Eligibility
To qualify for the program, the household's gross annual income must meet specific limits that vary based on family size. For example, a family of four must have a gross income of no more than $77,650 to be eligible. Additionally, a maximum household income of $102,500 is set for a family of eight, while a single-person household must not exceed an annual income of $54,350.
Post-Application Steps
After submitting your application, you can update your contact and household information through NYCHA’s Self-Service Portal. If you need to change your name, Social Security number, or date of birth, you can get assistance through NYCHA’s HCV hotline.
The entire application process takes about 20 minutes and requires information on household members, including income and criminal background. You will only need to provide documentation if you proceed to the interview stage.
Looking Ahead
The waitlist will be posted by August 1, 2024, and applicants will be notified. This notification will provide access to check the application status through the Self-Service Portal. 200,000 applications will be randomly assigned to the waitlist through an automated selection process, but being on the waitlist does not guarantee placement.
Maintaining Your Application
NYCHA will send an Application Renewal notice every two years, prompting applicants to update their information on the Self-Service Portal to indicate continued interest in the program.
After Voucher Issuance
After confirming eligibility and issuing a voucher, applicants will receive a briefing on the program details. Typically, voucher holders are required to contribute 30% of their monthly gross income towards rent. They will then have up to 180 days to find suitable housing.
